Howdy bike racers... seems that there's a little peckin' in the hen house just before the weekend's races. Drafting, not drafting, pulling through, not pulling through... hills, no hills (and for the record... I endorse no hills)... Now I thought it might be just a ladies issue, but it appears to be the same thing happenin' in the fellas ranks as well.
Let Ol' Curly share a bit of insight with you... Now Ol' Curly ain't always been just a cyclist... he was a rower at one time as well. Well, when the 8 of us fellers first got together (even though we all rowed in college) we was novices to the sport of rowing with each other... we were just excited to be there and in the mix. After a time, our ignorant enthusiasm led us to some victories... some at the local level and then at the regional level... some of us rowed on to silvers at World's... we was on a high. Then we started to figure out that we wuz becoming experts. Each one of us got to be better and better at pointing out what the others were doing wrong. Before we knew it, we had us a few little sub groups. It used to be just ports vs. starboards... then it was bow ports vs. stern ports... The point is... ignorance is bliss. After that first year, we was never as good. Our critical nature always prevented us from every gaining the kind of focus we needed as a team. You know what happened next? I AM back on the bike. Sure, the Cat 4's (and 5's sorry... I'll never get used to that)crash and do the "wrong" thing and chase every friggin thing down right away rather than wait a bit, see if it's moving up the road, and then organize to pick up the speed. We pull off down wind and leave 3 feet between the guy in front. We ask for a feed in a 30 mile race... we buy Axley Eyewear cuz Omer Kem wears them and not cuz they're good... But don't worry... soon we'll all be with you to help pick apart others bad tactics and the sub-par racing skills... just like the PROS. There's something to being ignorant and having fun... Now let's remember that bike racing isn't about doing things perfect for everyone... it's a challenge... and challenges are called that for a reason. Now if yer team ain't got a "dev" team... git one. You can tell all your own folks the "best way to control 30-60 other bike riders"...
now as for you ladies 4's... I want to see some Johnny Hustle from you from now on... that's just plain lazy to let a break away go... especially since you're supposed to be chasing everything down right away.
Your Training: Send me your "worst ever"...
For the weekend... have a safe trip to Walla Walla... Be sure to check our CTodd's coverage of the T of G... Speakin' of which... Rock City TT cracks me up. Anyone very been to Rock City during the Christmas Holiday?
Oh... and if you git a chance... read this Dec 1900 prediction about the year 2000
