Mornin'... I got me an e-mail yesterday sayin' "Curly... why'd ya go and scare the crap outta that poor fella who was about to flatten your ass with his car door? That makes us cyclists look bad". Now the Curly from Monday might have gone crazy as a colt at that e-mail... cuz I did address that yesterday and all. But "Trivia Thursday" Curly ain't gonna do that.
E-mailer... let's assume that I thought I could change the world by not letting that poor dumbass know that he needs to watch traffic before opening his door. Right now, he'd be out there oblivious to the fact that he nearly killed a person. This Saturday even... he might do the same thing again... except it's a team of cyclists. Most of them go down to the ground, a few get seriously hurt, another few get pissed and beat the crap outta that poor dumbass. He has now learned the hard way and now he's scared to go near a bike... further reinforcing his dependency on cars OR he might make a change. Now if I'd stopped and told him kindly, he would have ignored the whole thing and it wouldn't have jumped into his long term memory. With MY way, now it's there... like a spirit in his brain... "Loooooook out for Cyyyyyyyclistssss!
Ya see E-mailer... people don't change when there's no pain or trauma experienced. They just keep doing the same thing cuz it works. When that pain becomes ALMOST more than they can handle, they, their body, their mind... makes a change. It's why I'm so damned hard on you guys... I want you to change into good cyclists... Now let me give you an example. I got me a friend named Jim. He's nearly 60. He's bugged me for years about us cyclists ridin' on the roads and how he never gives them an inch and sometimes he throws stuff at them. Well, Jim went to the Dr. last December... he has a whole host of maladies... cancer, blocked arteries, failing kidneys from drinking Vodka instead of Bourbon... anyway, that was enough pain for him to change... he started riding his bike... on the roads... first without his damned helmet. A few days later, he was run into a ditch by a jackass like himself... No, he wasn't hurt seriously, but it was enough pain for him to start wearing a helmet. Some of you are wondering if that story has any truth... and it does... Jim takes a different approach to his life and although no apologies have ever been thrown my way, I KNOW that HE KNOWS... he was dead wrong.
Jim's doing better btw... not great, but better... he's realizes that any day riding on this side of the pavement is a good day. Now go play trivia! See you tomorrow where I'll uplift your ass with something good.
